It looks like button thread i.e. slightly thicker than ordinary sewing cotton or what my mum used to refer to as “linen cotton”.

Beautiful photo. Wooden bobbins are pretty hard to come by these days. If you hammer a few nails into one end you can do french knitting on it :)

Gosh, I’d quite forgotten that ! Happy memories of my childhood ! We made circular coils out of assorted coloured wool with them and made them into table mats ! Good old wooden cotton reels .

Love this photo, it brings back memories of my Nana’s sewing basket full of wooden bobbins. Thanks for sparking a memory. x

Apt as I have been sorting out my Granny’s house all week and there were tins of these, makes me feel comforted somehow!

Reminds me of my mum’s singer sewing machine, I would have to turn the handle & got points taken off for going to fast or to slow, a career in daydreaming dashed at an early age!

Lovely shot! Can you still buy thread like that? Way too pretty to consign to a sewing basket!

Don’t tell me you’ve just bought the domain for a new sewing blog – http://www.sewsimple.com (actually I’m off to check if that’s available before you nab it!)

THIS is beautiful. Lovey shot, and SO evocative. I want some of these old spools.
BTW, what are you making with it? Or was it just for show?

Seeing this picture fills me a deep sense of regret that I never took my mum up on her offer of sewing lessons. I’d love to have the skills to make my own creations (my mum made my own wedding dress!) but any project I attempt ends up looking like it’s been made by my 2 year old. Sob.

Alas my sewing skills leave a lot to be desired, I was taking some very random photos this week and dug out Papasaurus’s late nan’s sewing box and had a root about.

It’s lovely old thread but sort of sad at the same time x
