This weekend we visited Wallasea Island as part of a family fun day that the RSPB were holding. I don’t think Essex is particularly known for it’s islands but (quickly checks Wikipedia…) there are 19 of them. Wallasea Island is home to a new RSPB project creating a massive reserve twice the size of the city of London. It feels strange to be there, to be about 15 minutes from the over populated streets and crowded beaches of Southend. To look out across the marshes and see waves of samphire growing. It does feel like a wild coast area, like something you should see on holiday, down in Dorset or Cornwall. Not somewhere that I traveled to straight after my obligatory morning hey-I’ve-got-two-kids Starbucks.
