Visit to Herculanium and 2000 year old Pizza When on holiday earlier this summer we visited Herculanium. it is on the opposite side of Mount Versuvius to Pompeii. Herculanium was not covered by lava from the volcano eruption like Pompeii, instead it was covered by tons and tons of mud. This meant that even the timbers were preserved as well as the stone and, therefore the buildings still had rafters and roofs on. Herculanium was a smaller,richer town than Pompeii. Two thousand years ago the people of the town tried to rush to what was then the beach to escape the mud on boats and many bodies were uncovered here. These were the people unable to get on the boats.
