A couple of weeks ago there was a teacher strike day at K's school so we decided to make the most of it and have a day trip. Our choice of location was limited to somewhere easy to get to with a buggy and cheap. I had a look for inspiration online and our last-minute destination was decided... the Emirates Air Line cable cars by the O2 arena.

Kids under 5 go free and there is a discount for adults if you use your Oyster card so it worked out at £12.80 for a return journey for all four of us (there's also a '360 sightseeing tour' but this just means that you stay in the cable car without getting off to look around, the price is exactly the same as a return journey).

I imagined a set-up similar to the London Eye but as soon as you get to the terminal there is no mistaking that it's a Transport for London operation. There's a ticket booth and self-service machines but with an Oyster card you simply touch in through the barriers as you would at a tube station and up to the 'cabins'...
