Yes, Dave by Sue Hendra is a children’s book but I didn’t dare put what it was about in the title. Hold breath. Okay… it’s about a farting cat. How embarrassing. Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford was so mortified about breaking wind in front of Queen Elizabeth I that apparently he went on a seven year self-imposed exile. On his return she told him, “My Lord, I had forgotten about the fart.”

The word fart is actually one of the oldest used words from “Old English.” Most probably the Anglo-Saxon laborer in the 11th century talked about his farts as much as his 21st century version.
