I blamed it on the dog. The fractured leg from tripping down the stairs. The blackened eye from the low tree branch. Why I rarely leave the house. The scratches on my frightened face. The bruises where it bit my arm. The reason I don’t open the front door to anyone. How I cover my ears to stop the incessant barking. Why I couldn’t leave sooner. I blamed it on the dog.

Then I ran and left it behind. Left it there with him. I close my eyes and a guilty tear trickles down my cheek. Now I blame myself.
