Elephants have been an integral part of Thai communities for centuries. Until logging ban in 1989, elephants were used to transport heavy loads for logging companies. Due to the consequential deforestation the remaining elephant habitat is far too small to host all 2,500 surviving elephants living in Thailand.

With logging stopped elephants and their trainers (named ‘mahouts’) were suddenly unemployed; trainers had the option of abandoning elephants, begging with them on the street, or turning to the tourist industry as a new source of income.
