Do you fancy a holiday but haven’t got time for a whole week away? Milan in Italy is the perfect choice for a short city break and with flight times from the UK being just a couple of hours you can really pack a lot into a long weekend away. Milan has been give the title ‘Top Choice for 52 places to go in 2015’ by the New York Times. Because the World Expo is being held there this year the city has undergone some energetic changes with old structure such as a sawmill and bank being repurposed as shops and cultural centres. 2015 is an exciting time to visit Milan. When one thinks of Milan one instantly thinks of fashion, and it’s true there is everything a fashion lover could desire from the designer boutiques to chic high street shops. But there’s much more to Milan than fashion and style, there’s a wealth of culture too from Gothic cathedrals and the Opera Theatre to football stadiums and romantic hangouts. Relaxed cafes dotted along the streets and fantastic cuisine makes Milan the perfect romantic getaway for couples and a relaxed break for families too. To get an honest flavour of Milan I asked some friends who have been to tell me about their time there:
“Milan is of course Italy's capital of fashion and design and with the Expo on until the end of October it's an exciting time to visit. Unlike London where modern and ancient architecture sit cheek by jowl, you'll find very distinct areas in Milan. For Italian Gothic architecture visit the Duomo and take in the panoramic view from the roof terrace. For state of the art modern architecture, go to the Porta Nuova area for skyscrapers, the fascinating vertical forest apartments and modern art installations including a corn field and vegetable planting project right in the heart of the city.” - Lizzie from Me and my shadow
“I Adore Milan, I spent a lot of time roaming the streets finding obscure bars that were really quirky and unusual and fun. The markets are to die for and there's a 'non so come dire' to Milan that makes me want to go back.” - Marianne from Mari's World
“I loved Milan! We went as the first stop on our honeymoon and we keep meaning to go back - we were cautious with money as first stop but wish we'd gone at the end. We went to a great mozzarella tasting restaurant. Was extremely good sat looking over the Duomo and eating cheese.” – Laura from Knead Wine
“I've only been with work but a lasting memory will be coming out of the metro at night up into the square with the Duomo right in front of me all lit up. Breath-taking. It's a very walkable city with lots of eateries, fashionista heaven too.” - Mary from Over 40 and a Mum to One “I visited Milan with my Mum ten years ago. We stayed in an awful hotel- the Medusa - but despite that we enjoyed the trip. I'll never forget our evening watching Bizet's Carmen, squeezed into teeny, ornate seats in the incredible Teatro Alla Scala. Based on our experience I'd thoroughly recommend!” - Nell from the Pigeon Pair and me
“I spent 24 hours in Milan with kids but these are some of the things I recommend to do with them: take trams everywhere, trying out all the different ones, from sleek modern to classic wooden ones. Visit Sfoza castle, Museo Inter e Milan (for football fans), book well ahead on line if you want to see de Vinci's Last Supper, shopping in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and of course the fabulous Duomo.” – Lou from Lou Messugo Have you spent time in Milan?
