Getting ready to write

In order to write, you have to be able to hold a pencil. You have to hold it in a certain way, and push it and pull it in the right directions and at the right time, to form letters and words.
Imagine you are wearing boxing gloves and holding a pencil in the hand you wouldn’t normally (so the left hand if you are right-handed). This is a bit like what it’s like for young children, before they have developed the muscles they need to write ‘properly’; it’s really hard!
