Don’t assume that a reluctance to read is down to laziness or disinterest; it could be because your boy is resisting reading situations because he is unconfident or he has a reading difficulty.

Engage him by providing lots of informal opportunities for reading – don’t try and recreate a classroom environment.

Think ‘boy’ and tap into the things that engage him.

Give him chances to practise and improve his reading without realising it.

Watch sports programmes with the subtitles on.

Take him to the library and show him the non-fiction section; lots of boys prefer factual content to fiction.
