I dislike all beauty contests, for adults as well as children, because they promote society’s obsession with body image. What sort of a person you are, how you treat others, what you achieve in life, these should be the important things, not what you look like. Yet this is precisely what these contests emphasise, and by aiming such contests at babies, toddlers and preschoolers we are passing on this message to young children that appearance is the most important thing, at precisely the time when they are at their most impressionable.
