05-03-2012 Love Health Weekly Showcase

05 March

Welcome to the Health Showcase – for you first time visitors, thank you so much for stopping by!  For those of you becoming ‘regulars’ thanks for coming back.

This week I’ve been to the GP’s twice and Great Ormond Street Hospital once.  The NHS is incredibly stretched at the moment, we’ve read on here over the past few weeks people having what can only be described as hideous experiences in all sorts of departments.  This week I’ve been treated with compassion, care and understanding.  Yes, I’ve been presented with a whole load of new logistical challenges as the NHS juggles it’s budget and those are ones I could, in all honesty, do without.  However, without the NHS, we wouldn’t be where we are today, if here at all – and for that, I’m very grateful…

Stop Smoking March 14th 2012

No Smoking day is Coming up on Wednesday 14th March 2012 so I thought what better time to share with you about my own stopping smoking journey.

It was a lot easier to smoke when I was a child. You could buy “singles” which were individual cigarettes – making it a lot more affordable. Then it was around 80 pence for 20 Benson and Hedges – with us vowing to stop if they ever got as expensive as £1. You could smoke in shops, on the bus, in the cafe, cinema – just about anywhere.

J.R. Barker – The healing properties of tea

Good old Tea. The miracle elixir, it seems to be used as a cure all. It’s the British archetypal drink, from mother’s ‘sympathetic chat and a cuppa’, winding down at the end of the day, waking up in the morning or simply getting through the day. I myself love to curl up with a good book and a nice hot cuppa. I’m also starting to wonder if I should be giving the credit to some of my writing to the consumption of said beverage.

What is it that makes us want to drink dried leaves boiled in water?

An English Mamma in Stockholm – Two steps forward, one step back

I’ve been a little quiet online for the past few days because my body decided that now was as good a time as any to get mastitis. Oh yes, and what a delight that has been…

On Sunday evening, Little O, Baby E and I came back from another second birthday party and I started to feel a little sore on my left-hand side, spreading down from under my arm. I could not feel any lumps so I did not think anything more of it.

The Camel’s Hump – The Benefits of Hynotherapy in Chronic Illness

The Benefits of Hynotherapy in Chronic Illness

Mind-body interactions include the techniques of relaxation, meditation, music therapy, hypnotherapy and other complementary therapies. mamadeanomusings – The monster and I

The monster and I

7 years ago my Monster came to find me, and has kind of turned everything topsy turvy ever since. CFS ( chronic fatigue syndrome ) It’s a funny old one, not life threatening, not degenerative but still Chronic none the less. It swept me off my feet, and not in a good way. Many hopes and dreams, not huge and lofty, just everyday things, qualifying as a teacher, spending time with friends, working, cooking, walking, have all been taken away to some degree or other.

Living with Mom’s cancer – Courting controversy

Courting controversy

I belong to a gym. I swim regularly. I walk two Boxer dogs every day. I am an active, happy person. Last year was difficult, not just because Mom was ill but also because my level of fitness plummeted, along with my weight. My health suffered as a result of the sleep deprivation and the stress of caring for Mom and supporting Dad. By the time Mom died, I could hardly walk. I needed to heal myself.

Trouble Doubled – A reformed chocoholic speaks

A reformed chocoholic speaks

This month saw the start of Lent and many millions of people give up things, whether out of a jokey ‘I’m giving up chocolate’ spirit, or out of genuinely religious feelings about Lent. I have, in fact given up chocolate but, rather arbitrarily chose the week BEFORE pancake day to do the deed.

I’m Counting UFOs – Grommets Surgery

Grommets Surgery

Today, Roo finally had her grommets surgery after months of waiting. The hospital admissions team rang on Thursday with the date, which didn’t exactly give us much time to prepare. But I am convinced this was a good thing, given how psyched up I was the last time, and how disappointed we all felt when it was cancelled two days before it was due to happen.

Back Pain Blog – TOP FIVE TIPS FOR HELP WITH EVERY DAY JOBS WHEN IN PAIN WITH FIBROMYALGIA…

If you suffer from pain in your hands and fingers and struggle to hold your pen then try sliding an old foam roller (with the centre taken out) onto your pen.

You can also use this same method for a cutting knife in your kitchen.

If you are struggling to stand in your kitchen to do simple cooking tats then invest in an office chair with wheels to slide across the floor.
